New Incentives at ALP
The focus at West Bay Collaborative's Draper ALP goes beyond individualized instruction on a daily class-by-class basis; there is also a school-wide community effort to implement PBIS. A Student PBIS Committee has been meeting regularly to brainstorm ways to inspire and encourage peers and staff alike to build a more positive and supportive community. Lately, efforts have included creative rewards systems where students earn special privileges by demonstrating acts of respect, responsibility, and readiness in the school and in classes. In the same vein, students are engaged in a metacognition curriculum in their advisories where they are challenged to reflect and think about their goals (academic and personal), learning styles, successes and failures to become better prepared students and community members. This includes weekly reflections where students can examine their personal and academic progress. Most recently the school's climate has been shaped by the formation of an honors group where students are challenged and pushed to their respective limits academically and personally to succeed. The group has agreed to maintain high grades in all classes and a steady attendance rate to take part in this group and earn the privileges that come with it. This is inspiring other students to improve and focus their efforts to earn their way into this group; weekly reflection on academic progress provides students with a tangible connection between their successes and goals.
